T2 - Week 5 - At Home Learning

8/5/2020

Picture

Morena Room 1! I am hoping this picture soon becomes our reality.
I miss all your faces and look forward to seeing everyone once we are a bit more back to normal.
At the moment all we we know that we will be at Level 3 until at least Monday, and will be receiving an update then on any changes. Jacinda's announcement on Thursday stated that even once the decision is made to move to Level 2 (whenever that happens) that schools would start back at the beginning of the following week. With that in mind, at this stage I have provided another week of learning activities for you.

Devotions

The Beginning (Genesis 1:20-25)
Big Question - Who made the World?
This Week - Amazing Animals
MV - In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Genesis 1:1
Song: In the Beginning
Lesson: Read Genesis 1:20-25 together, talking about the different animals that it said God made. Talk about different animals and where they live.
Play Activities: 1) Match to the Patch - using toy animals you have at home put them in front of you, take turns describing where that animal would live and see if the other person/people can guess which animal you choose. Continue until all of the animals have had their homes described. 2) Create some Critters - use craft materials, boxes etc you have around the house and make an animal that lives in the sea, land or sky. 3) Animal Noises - Take turns making the sound of animals, the other person has to guess whether that animals is from the land, sea or sky.

Maths

1. Sorting and Matching Similarities in Shapes

- Print a copy of the attribute shapes below if you can and cut them out.
- If you don't have a printer - draw 4 of each shape (triangle, circle, square) - some big and some small (try to keep the big to a similar size and small to a similar size). Colour in the shapes using 3 different colours.
Attribute Shapes
File Size: 4 kb
File Type: gif
Download File

- Ask your child to sort the shapes into size groups.
- Then into groups of their shapes.
- Play a matching game - share out all of the shapes between you. Start by putting down 1 shape then tell your child they need to put down one of their shapes next to it that has something that matches (size, colour or shape) explaining what matches. Continue to take turns with this until you have used all of the shapes (or as many of the shapes that you can). Then go back over the line together and say what matches between each pair.

2. Naming and Labelling Numbers 1-20

*Ask your child to draw a growing pattern of the numbers 1-20 (you could first do this with Numicon shapes 1-10) then use them to help draw the rest. These can be dots or squares etc.
*Ask them to point and count to each number.
*Then point to different numbers on the line and ask what number it is.
*In order, write the numbers 1-20 (or get your child to do it!!) then cut these out as separate numbers.
*Hand one number to your child at a time and get them to match it with the correct picture they've drawn. Continue until they have labelled all the numbers.

3. Continuing Addition

*continuing on from last week's learning, recap the words and symbols introduced and used when telling adding sentences - plus, more, add, and, +
*ask your child to make up new adding stories and writing down the adding sentences, saying the sentence as or after it's been written down.
Numbers to 10 Practice
File Size: 513 kb
File Type: pdf
Download File

4. An Addition Game

*this is a game called 'turn is over' which helps children to learn adding facts.
*your child will need the numbers 2-10 (written on squares of paper) face up, in order in a 3x3 grid in front of them.
*ask your child to choose two Numicon shapes, put them together and say the adding sentence (eg, 2+5=7) they then turn over the card showing the answer and put the Numicon shapes back in the pile.
*The aim is to turn over all of the numbers in their grid. So continue with different shapes, if they choose two numbers that also add to a number already turned over they don't get to turn a new number over (eg 4+3=7 but 7 is already turned over) so they try again.
*You could but don't have to get your child to write the number sentences as they go.

Sleepy Sloth used his highlighter to find all the Jj's in this week's poem  - I like Jelly. This poem reminds him of the tasty jelly he made earlier in the week.

Finding letters in context of words is a helpful tool to see that children can recognise letters not just on their own but when they are used. Each week in class when the children are learning these alphabet poems they use a highlighter to see how many of that letter they can find. A great counting activity too.

Sleepy Sloth used some more jellybeans today but this time to help with his number sentences. 4 orange jellybeans plus 5 white jellybeans, how many altogether?

Another use for jellybeans this week could be with maths activities you are doing. Instead of using toys or even Numicon shapes you could use things like jellybeans, counters, pasta, buttons (anything you have accessible to you at home.)

Sleepy Sloth made creations using Jellybeans and toothpicks. He made a yellow car with black tyres. What can you make?

This fun activity is great for hand eye coordination, creativity, counting and so much more. If you don't have toothpicks you could use spaghetti sticks - but are a bit more fiddly they can break easily.

Sleepy Sloth helped to make Jelly this morning. He will use what he has learnt and done to write about today - then he will get to taste his jelly after tea tonight!!

There are so many learning opportunities in the kitchen. Jelly is a fun kitchen-science activity. You can talk about changes that happen (from the solid sugar crystals to liquid after adding hot water to a jiggly set jelly). Write about the process of making the jelly. Taste and touch the jelly (using senses) then write or talk about it. You could make it in a bowl or silicon moulds and you could also add cut up fruit to your liquid jelly mixture before letting it set.

This week's letter of the week is the letter Jj. There are so many ideas and activities that I have included throughout the reading, writing and maths section that are hands-on or also relate to this week's letter. But there are also heaps of extra Jj developmental activity ideas at the bottom of the page.

Hi Room 1 Families!
Here is Week 4's learning at home ideas and activities.
A couple of items you may want to add to your shopping list for writing and developmental activities this week are Jellybeans and Jelly!
Have a great week, I'm looking forward to hearing from you and seeing what you're getting up to at home.

Devotions

The Beginning (Genesis 1:11-13, 27-31)
Big Question - Who made the World?
This Week - God the creator is also God the provider. He made the plants and trees.
MV - In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Genesis 1:1
Songs: In the Beginning
Play Activities: 1) Explore outdoors - look at the different textures, colours and scents of plants and trees in your garden or close by outside areas. 2) Dramatic play 'shops' - set up a fruit and vegetable shop and talk about where fruits and vegetables come from. 3) Bark or leaf crayon rubbings - find some different textured items outside that you can create crayon rubbings from on a piece of paper.
Object Lesson - Using a piece of fruit (apple in example) - cut up and share an apple. Once it is all gone talk about what you would do to get more if there were none left in the house (grocery store, market, tree). Apples grow on trees but where did trees come from? God made plants, trees, flowers and seeds. Talk about what other things God has made. Read Genesis 1:11a - God said to do something and it was done! Make up actions for the different things God made - tall trees, tiny seeds, beautiful flowers, delicious fruit. Talk about why plants and trees are important for us and how this is one way God provides for us (food, shelter). We are to look after and care for creation.
Beginners Bible Story - focusing on the part of the story where God created the plants and trees.

Maths - Addition and Adding Sentences

These lessons introduce different vocabulary that are all asking addition questions. It is important for them to hear and use a variety of words so that when they hear a question with one of these words in it they will know they are needing to add.

1. 'and'

*Children can solve problems using small toys/figurines or Numicon shapes.
*Give your child questions like "At the park, four children were climbing on the monkey bars and five children were on the swings. How many children were there altogether?" *Continue with further questions with different numbers, then get your child to come up with their own questions and to show you how they work them out.
*Ask "Does it matter which number of children you add first?" Talk about if there were three children on the slide and two on the seesaw you could add 2+3 or 3+2 and will get the same answer.
*If your child is up to it, get them to practice writing the number sentences as they solve the problems.

2. 'more'

To continue on learning and the context from yesterday:
*Explain that there were already three children on the monkey bars when four more arrived to play on it. Ask how many children altogether would now be on the monkey bars? (then is introducing the word more and linking that hearing that means they also need to be adding).
*Make up other adding stories where 'more' is added. Encourage your child to use Numicon shapes to find the totals without counting.
*Ask your child to make up and share with you their own adding stories with 'more'.

3. 'plus'

*use two dice to create adding stories and using Numicon shapes to solve the problem (the playground context can still be used or you could just stick to the numbers)
*instead of saying and or more, use the word plus (and show the symbol +)
*continue rolling the two dice to come up with a variety of questions. Saying the number sentence _ plus _ equals __
*practice writing some of these as number sentences _+_=__

4. a different order for an adding sentence

*use or make number cards 1-10 also make a + and = symbol.
*Say "there were seven children in the park on the slide and the roundabout" ask "how many children might have been on the slide and how many on the roundabout?" (there will be multiple correct combinations that make the number seven)
*show how you would use their answer to make a number sentence (using the number and symbol cards) eg 3+4=7
*Ask if there is a different number of children that could be on the slide and roundabout that would still add to seven - this time get them to show you with the number and symbol cards once they have thought of another combination.
*Continue with different 'total' numbers using two pieces of equipment at the park and getting your child to find possible adding sentences that would work.
Here are some follow up adding worksheets they could complete (or continue with any unfinished worksheets from your At Home Learning Pack). If you don’t have a printer you can always write out your own questions for your child to fill in the answer or if they are up to it get them to write down the questions as you read them aloud to them. If your child is still learning to form numbers correctly you could draw shapes to represent the question eg 2 squares plus 3 squares and then they draw the correct number of squares after an equals symbol.

Writing

Here are some writing ideas and sentence starters to choose from for this week.
Get your child to choose one (or more) of their stories, take a photo and send it to Mrs Coe, I will reply to them :)
*Write something about the plants and trees in your garden (linking to devotions)
*Write about JUMPING
*Write about something JOYFUL

*Make JELLY together. Talk about what it looks like in the packet, once you've added the water and then once it has set. Talk about how you made it and/or what it tastes like. All of these things can spark different things to write about in the following days. You could add a sentence to the story each day giving more information or write with different sentence starters or ideas.
*Write about how the Jelly changed in what it looked like
*Jelly tastes like… (describe in a creative way)
*My wobbly Jelly…
You could also base writing off something you have read, done or seen that day or during the week. Your child could also write about what they are going to share for news.

Oral Language / News

*find something at home beginning with the letter Jj. Send a short video sharing your news (by Thursday) with the class and Mrs Coe will post them on the blog on Friday.
Try to remember to greet the class (Good morning or afternoon Room 1), and tell us about what you are sharing, mum or dad might even ask a question for you to answer to give us some more information.
*Also if you make some Jelly - take a photo of your child with their creation so the class can see!

Developmental

*JELLY - make jelly. Talk about what it looks like in the packet, once you've added the water and then once it has set. Talk or write about how you made it and/or what it tastes like.
*JUMPING - have a jumping competition - who in your family can do the most of a certain type of jumps (star jumps, leap frog jumps, jump rope, etc) in 1 minute.
*JUMP on the trampoline (if you have one).
*JOKES - tell jokes together as a family. See if you can come up with your own knock, knock jokes.
*Get crafty and see if you can make a JELLYFISH.
*JIGSAW puzzles - get any puzzles out that you have at home to play with.
*Make a collage using newspapers, magazine, old cards etc of pictures starting with the letter Jj.
*Have a go making something out of JELLYBEANS and toothpicks or spaghetti.
Picture
*Colour, Cut, Paste - jigsaw puzzle - choose one of the jigsaw puzzle templates (one is to draw/colour their own the other has a picture on it already to colour in) once coloured cut out and muddle up the pieces. Try to piece the puzzle back together again and stick onto another piece of paper.

Devotions

The Beginning (Genesis 1:9-10)
Big Question - Who made the World?
This Week - God speaks, he made the land and sea.
MV - In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Genesis 1:1
Songs: In the Beginning (from last week)
Play Activity Ideas:

1) Islands in the sea - design a simple obstacle course (you could draw 'islands' on the ground with chalk or use cushions or newspaper, mountains/chairs to climb over, bridges etc). See if your child can go through the obstacle course by going on the islands and not falling in the sea!
2) At the beach - make a pretend beach by arranging towels, balls, sunglasses, buckets, etc (near a sandpit if you have one - otherwise find things sand and sea coloured to represent those things). Use this as an imaginative play space.
3) Sandy toes - a sensory activity with wet and dry sand (if you have it), describe what the different sand feels like.
4) Make a snack that reminds them God made the land and sea - this could be blue jelly (sea) with bits of fruit (land) or anything creative you can thing of!
Object Lesson
- (If you made a play space you could do this talking in that area) Play a quick game of Simon says then ask "How do you think God made the land and sea?" When God said something, it happened. Imagine you're at the beach, what can you hear/feel/see? God spoke and told the water to come together in one place…and it did! When that happened there was dry ground. What are the different names for the water, and dry ground? God's word is very powerful. When he speaks or commands something, it happens!!
Beginners Bible Story - focusing on the part of the story where God created the sun, moon and stars.

Maths
Comparisions and Differences

Here are 3 days (Tuesday-Thursday) of Maths activities. Remember you also have hard copy worksheets you can use and to start off with Mad Math Minute and number wiritng pracitce.

1. Comparing length and width

Use a collection of ribbons, string or cut up strips of paper (depending what you have accessible)
*challenge your child to find different ways to sort and order the ribbons/string/paper (could be colours, lengths, widths)
*Talk about how they chose to sort and order the items. Are there other ways you could do it?
*Place 2 ribbons/string/paper pieces next to each other, "which is longer?"
*Ask your child to find one shorter than one you show them.
*Link longer and shorter to tall and short with a follow up worksheet

2. Comparing weight

Below are two activities, depending what you have at home you could do one or both of them.
Bags of Books
*
Use a selection of books from around the house and two bags that you can't see through.
*Put some books in each bag (one heavier than the other). Talk about which one is heavier and which is lighter.
*Get your child to guess which bag has more books inside. Open the bags and check.
*Talk about how the bag with the biggest number of books may not always mean the heaviest. Why? (Size, thickness, number of pages of books).
Balls of Playdough

*Make some playdough, or use some you have at home already. Split the dough into different sized balls.
*Compare two balls of playdough, holding one in each hand talking about which is lighter and which is heavier.
*Continue this with different sized balls.
*Try with eyes closed.

3. Differences in pairs of objects

*Find pairs of objects around the house and ask what is the same and what is different?
*Cut strips of paper. Choosing two at a time talk about the things that are the same and the things that are different.
*Using Numicon shapes select two at a time and ask about the similarities and differences.
*You could follow up with a worksheet looking for the picture with what is different. Get your child to draw in what is missing on each line

Spelling
This week's words: was, bad, are

  • Sound out the word (see example of how we do this in class)
  • Say the word in a sentence
  • Practice writing the word
  • Try writing the sentence they came up with and drawing a picture to go with it.

Practice all of this week's spelling words in fun ways - in sand or salt, with chalk, with water and a paint brush on concrete, write as rainbow words etc. Test your child to see what they remember.

Writing

Here are some writing ideas and sentence starters to choose from for this week. Aim to write one story each day.
Get your child to choose one (or more) their favourite stories, take a photo and send it to Mrs Coe, I will reply to them :)

*"On ANZAC day…"
*If you made ANZAC cookies in the weekend, write about how you made them OR what they tasted like.
*Go on an insect hunt in the garden and write about what you found.
*"I like…"
*"I went…"
*"I see…"
*Write about what it would be like to live in an IGLOO. "In my igloo…"
You could also base writing off something you have read, done or seen that day or during the week. Your child could also write about what they are going to share for news.

Oral Language / News

*find something at home beginning with the letter Ii.

Developmental

*Colour, Cut, Paste - penguin to stick in front of the igloo
*Freeze some plastic toys in a block of ICE, watch them melt in the sun or try different ways to get them out.

*Become an INVENTOR - make, construct or build something using whatever resources you have at home.
*Make a collage using newspapers, magazine, old cards etc of pictures starting with the letter Ii.
*INDOOR or INVENTOR scavenger hunt. Or you could make your own looking for different types of INSECTS.

Numicon Cookies

20/4/2020

Mrs Coe and Sleepy Sloth were busy making Numicon biscuits yesterday.

Baking is a great hands on activity that you could do as a whole family.

Choose a cookie recipe that usually uses cookie cutters (I made shortbread due the ingredients I did/didn’t have at home but it wasn’t really my first choice!) then use a bread knife to make cookies in the shape of Numicon shapes. Younger children could be focusing on 1-1 counting or colour matching in putting pebbles or mnms on top and older children could focus on measuring ingredients and also the size of the cookies. But really focus on having fun together as a family.
We’d love to see your photos throughout the week if you give it a go!
