It was so good to see so many smiling faces back in Room 1 today after such a long time!
Welcome to Olivia having her first day at school this year after not seeing her since T4! We also enjoyed having Nehemiah join us for another visit before starting soon!

Picture

For maths today we looked at teen and twenty numbers and made number chains that we could hang up in the classroom to see the growing pattern.
For reading and writing today we did lots of talking about the time while we were at home and made a book together. The children each got a copy of this story to take home and keep.

Below is also the copy of the notices sent home today.

Please remember to send reading and writing books back to school if you haven't already. Thanks.

Jellybean Maths

Sleepy Sloth used some more jellybeans today but this time to help with his number sentences. 4 orange jellybeans plus 5 white jellybeans, how many altogether?

Another use for jellybeans this week could be with maths activities you are doing. Instead of using toys or even Numicon shapes you could use things like jellybeans, counters, pasta, buttons (anything you have accessible to you at home.)

Numicon Cookies

20/4/2020

Mrs Coe and Sleepy Sloth were busy making Numicon biscuits yesterday.

Baking is a great hands on activity that you could do as a whole family.

Choose a cookie recipe that usually uses cookie cutters (I made shortbread due the ingredients I did/didn’t have at home but it wasn’t really my first choice!) then use a bread knife to make cookies in the shape of Numicon shapes. Younger children could be focusing on 1-1 counting or colour matching in putting pebbles or mnms on top and older children could focus on measuring ingredients and also the size of the cookies. But really focus on having fun together as a family.
We’d love to see your photos throughout the week if you give it a go!

T2 - Week 1 - At Home Learning

13/4/2020

I hope you had a lovely long Easter weekend!
From Wednesday this week it marks the beginning of Term 2.

An email will be sent to all Y0-6 families with information relevant to the whole junior school. We understand this is a very unusual time and difficult for some. Please do not feel pressured if it is too much, but do let me know if there is anyway I can help.

In this post I have provided some more specific activities and learning you can do this week with your child. Remember to use the At Home Learning website to help you with ideas and teaching tips to put these things into practice.

The timetable below is based off what was sent in the Y0-6 email with a few extra ideas in regards to developmental play. Please note this is a suggested timetable and will be helpful for some families to maintain routine. But you do not need to stick to it if doing things in a different order or time works better for you! We have suggested half hour blocks for most activities. If your child is interested and wanting to do more - that is totally fine too!

I have given a range of developmental ideas and activities at the end, as well as activities that link in with our letter of the week, don't feel like you have to do all (or any) of them!!

Devotions

Jesus is alive! (Matthew 28:1-10, Acts 1:1-11)
Easter is the time when we remember not only the death of Jesus but also his resurrection. Jesus is God's Son who died and was brought back to life. Jesus died so that we can be friends with God, but he didn't stay dead - God brought him back to life. Jesus is alive!
Talk with your child about how they feel that Jesus is alive again. Pray together thanking Jesus for what he did on the cross.
MV - Jesus said…"I am the Son of God". John 10:36a

Object Lesson - together create a space that could represent a tomb. Talk about how after Jesus died his body was placed in a tomb and a big rock was placed in front of it. Pretend to be the women who went to visit the tomb, how do you think they felt that Jesus was dead? When they got to the tomb what did they find? An angel and no stone - how would they feel now? Read Matthew 28:6. Look inside your empty tomb. What do you think they did next? They ran off to tell the disciples the good news. Who can we share this story and good news with? Sing songs - making up actions to go with the words.
Songs - Lord I Lift your Name on High
            - Jesus is alive today

Maths
Due to the short week I have given 3 days of Maths activities.

1. Sorting

*use your washing or a selection of clothing or even pairs of socks as a prop for this.
*sort clothing based on differences/similarities - length, size, thickness etc. Talk about the things that are the same and the things that are different.
*odd one out
-using objects around the house make groups of objects with one item that doesn't fit in the group - get your child to sort them. Or get a large collection of different things around the house, ask your child to sort them into groups, get them to tell you what is the same about each group, it may be a colour, a shape, what it is made out of etc
*you could also choose to do some follow up worksheets based around the odd one out.

2. Teen Numbers

*talk about teen numbers, what numbers are 'teen numbers' practice writing them.
*make a teen number book by either downloading and printing the worksheets below, or using these as inspiration and creating your own on paper. (This may take some time!)
Teen Number Book
File Size: 2878 kb
File Type: pdf
Download File

3. Subtraction

*take away 1 song
*using small toys or blocks use 'stories' to tell taking away/subtracting sentences. E.g. I made a tower with 7 blocks, but 3 blocks fell off, how many do I have left? The children can then use the blocks or Numicon shapes to solve the problem. Then talk about the number sentence that represents (7-3=4), repeat this with lots of different questions.
*continue to practice subtracting sentences, getting your child to also write down the numbers. You could use the worksheets below, or make up your own questions.

Please note from your physical learning pack that was sent home before lockdown the Teen Number Game activity also links in with this weeks learning. Some of the practice worksheets also sent home that fit well this week are pages 18, 23 and 24, also any of the 'after' activities on pages 26, 27 and 29.

Phonics & Spelling

Phonics
Please note that each of this week's sounds are diagraphs
(two letters that work together to make one sound).
  • Focus on one new sound a day
    - My name is ... (letter name - ch, sh, th)
    - My sound is ... (letter sound)
  • Come up with words starting with that sound
  • Listen to the song - link picture to sound and action
(choo choo train, shhhh quiet, tongues out cheeky clowns)

Reading

Continue reading the readers sent home with your child and learning their sight words with a variety of interactive and play-based activities. Below are additional books on Epic! that fit in with this week's letter theme, I shared these with your child's account on Saturday.
*Read the "Gg" book
*Read the story - Can I have a pet Gorilla -  Make the colour, cut & paste Gorilla from the developmental activities
*Listen to the story - Gertie Gorilla's Glorious Gift - Write a list of all the 'g' words you remember from the story.
*The Soccer Game
*Go, go, go
*What makes it go?
*Go left or right - Make a treasure hunt
*Toys that can go
*Go fire truck

Writing

Here are some writing ideas and sentence starters for this week. Aim to write one story each day.
Get your child to choose their favourite story, take a photo and send it to Mrs Coe.

*Watch the clip - Amazing Animals, Gorillas - write something amazing about a Gorilla
*Go, go, go…
*My gate…
*I got…
*Look at a picture of a goose, write something about what it looks like.
You could also base writing off something you have read, done or seen that day or during the week. Your child could also write about what they are going to share for news.

Oral Language
*find something at home beginning with the letter Gg. Send a short video sharing your news (by Thursday) with the class and Mrs Coe will post them on the blog on Friday.

Devotions

To start this term we are learning 'Who is God?' and 'Who is Jesus?' Last week we looked at God as King and this week continued out learning talking about God being caring. We talked about shepherds and how they look after sheep - and in the bible it talks about how God are the shepherd andwe are his sheep (Psalm 95:7). We learnt some fun songs this week and also are continuing to learn the days of creation from last week.vHere are the songs from this and last week:
We are also learning a song called
If God is...
(sung to the tune of If you're happy and you know it)
If God is the King make a crown
If God is the King make a crown
If God is the King and you want us all to know it
If God is the King make a crown

-This week we added the verse:
If God cares for you give a hug!

Letter and sounds of the Week:

This week we started our class 'letter of the week'. This letter will be referred to throughout the week during writing, reading, poetry, news and wherever else it fits into our day!
For news this week we had people sharing about areoplanes, apes, animals and April! We also came up with an AMAZING collection of words beginning with the letter a in our alphabet book.
Phonics Sounds of the week:

This week room 1 has had lots of fun with developmental, patterns, and watching our beans begin to grow. Here are a selection of photos from through the week.

Art

On Friday we used washout photos to help us create self portraits using crayons. Our goal was to select the best colours to match our photo. Can you work out who is who?
Picture
We talked about the best order to do our pictures in, picking colours that were the closest to our hair and skin colours and carefully looking at the details on the picture we needed to colour. Room 1 did really well!!

Getting to know Numicon

29/1/2019

We also This week as the children settle into school life we are using Numicon in many fun, interactive and interesting ways to let them show what they remember and know.
Today the children had the challenge of ordering the foam shapes as quickly and quietly as they could with no teacher help - but everyone had to contribute and work together as a team.
The children also had a variety of tasks they could choose between to engage with the Numicon shapes and equipment.

Room 1 maths children working together as a team to order the large foam shapes in the classroom. [Speed-up video]
